The Austin Police Department told reporters that three people were fatally shot during a shooting at a Target in Texas on Monday afternoon, including a child.

Authorities have not identified the suspected shooter, but he was apprehended after fleeing the scene. Police believe the car the suspect used to get away belonged to one of the two other victims, NBC News reported.

Two of the victims were declared dead in the Target parking lot, but the third was confirmed dead at a hospital. The identities of the victims have not been released so far and the age of the child was not clear.

One other person was treated on the scene but for an unrelated injury.

Austin Police told residents to stay clear of the area while the investigation into the shooting continues.

The suspect has been described as a 32-year-old white man. No motive has been released, but the suspect had a history of mental illness.

"This is a devastating situation, and my heart is with the victims and their families. While this remains an active and ongoing investigation, what I’ll say is that this was a sickening, cowardly act of gun violence," Austin Mayor Kirk Watson posted on X
