Los Angeles mayor imposes partial curfew for city's downtown amid rioting and looting
Residents in the area will be excluded from the curfew, along with homeless people, credentialed media and public safety and emergency personnel.
Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass on Tuesday night announced the city will enact a partial curfew for its downtown as it deals with rioting and looting from anti-ICE demonstrators.
The riots started over the weekend after federal authorities conducted multiple raids on illegal migrants in the Southern California city. President Donald Trump has since activated the California National Guard and United States Marines to help protect federal buildings and federal officers in Los Angeles.
Bass said during a news conference that the curfew, which will impact a one-square mile radius, will take effect on Tuesday night and is expected to last several days. Residents in the area will be excluded from the curfew, along with homeless people, credentialed media and public safety and emergency personnel.
The curfew will begin at 8 p.m. local time, and expire at 6 a.m. local time.
Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Chief Jim McDonnell also announced that arrests related to the protests have gone up recently, with law enforcement officers arresting nearly 200 people on Tuesday alone.
The LAPD also arrested 27 people on Saturday, 40 on Sunday and 114 people on Monday, he said.
“Following several consecutive days of growing unrest throughout the city since Saturday, we’ve seen a concerning escalation and unlawful and dangerous behavior,” McDonnell said. “Let me be clear that this behavior, blocking freeways, city streets and on ramps, refusing to comply with lawful dispersal orders and interfering with public safety operations, is dangerous, unlawful and won’t be tolerated."
Approximately 23 businesses in downtown Los Angeles have been looted so far.
