Los Angeles police confirms at least 50 arrested in weekend protests
The LAPD said 29 arrests were made on Saturday for disobeying an "order to disperse," and 21 people were arrested on Sunday.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on Monday confirmed that at least 50 arrests were made during the riots in downtown Los Angeles over the weekend, and charges range from looting to attempted murder.
The LAPD said 29 arrests were made on Saturday for disobeying an "order to disperse," and 21 people were arrested on Sunday. The charges on Sunday include attempted murder with a Molotov cocktail, assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon, failure to disperse and looting.
No fatalities have been reported but five officers and five horses have sustained minor injuries so far.
The department also revealed in a news release that it used 600 rounds of rubber bullets and other less-than-lethal munitions, and gas canisters.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell additionally warned the Trump administration in a separate release against sending Marines to the city without coordinating with local law enforcement officials.
McDonnell expressed confidence in the department's ability to handle large-scale protests and riots, and claimed military presence without proper coordination could cause “a significant logistical and operational challenge for those of us charged with safeguarding this city.”
“We are urging open and continuous lines of communication between all agencies to prevent confusion, avoid escalation, and ensure a coordinated, lawful, and orderly response during this critical time,” he added.
