At least five people are dead and dozens more were injured on Friday after a New York tour bus crashed while transporting at least 50 passengers from Niagara Falls to New York City.

The investigation into the crash, which is led by the New York State Police, is still ongoing, but officials said the crash was not caused by mechanical failure or impairment of the driver.

Local hospitals have accepted at least 30 patients from the bus crash with a range of injuries from critical to minor, including head and internal injuries and broken bones. Others have been deemed medically stable.

Earlier reports indicated that a child was among those who were killed in the crash, but the state police have since corrected the record and said all who have died so far were adults. The names of the deceased have not been released.

Officials believe most of the passengers were not wearing a seat belt, because multiple people were ejected from the bus.

"[An] investigation determined that a tour bus owned by M&Y Tour Inc was traveling east bound on the I-90 from Niagara Falls, NY to New York City," the state police said in a news release. "The bus exited the roadway into the median then abruptly corrected causing the bus to overturn and roll off the I-90 on the south embankment."

The state police said there were a total of 54 people on the bus, consisting of 52 passengers and two people who worked for the bus company.

New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul confirmed that she has been briefed on the "tragic" crash and is working with state police and local officials to provide assistance.
