Texas Democrats who fled to Illinois to prevent a redistricting vote in their state had to evacuate their hotel Wednesday over a bomb threat.

St. Charles police officers responded to a report of a bomb threat at about 7:15 a.m. CDT at a hotel where they were staying, The Hill news outlet reported. The officers, the fire department, and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office conducted a “thorough” search and did not find any device, and everyone was safe. A total of 400 people were evacuated as bomb squad units conducted their search, and everyone was able to return to the hotel.

"I am aware of reports that threats were made against Texas elected officials in our state," Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) posted on X. "Threats of violence will be investigated and those responsible will be held accountable. I have instructed @ILStatePolice to ensure we maintain public safety."

A group of Texas state House Democratic leaders said in a statement that a threat was made against their members but everyone is safe.

“We are safe, we are secure, and we are undeterred,” they said. “We are grateful for Governor Pritzker, local, and state law enforcement for their quick action to ensure our safety.”

Many of the 57 Texas House Democrats who left the state over a GOP vote to redraw the state's congressional map went to Illinois, but they are facing a daily fine of $500 for each day that they miss the special legislative session.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) ordered the arrest of the Democratic members who fled, arguing that they violated their oath of office by refusing to attend the special legislative session he called to address the redistricting plan.

President Trump has suggested that the FBI may get involved to help return the lawmakers, and Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn asked the FBI in a letter to assist in doing so.
