Three people are dead, at least four are injured, and nine people are missing on Monday after a boat capsized off the coast of San Diego, California, multiple news outlets are reporting.

The incident was first noted at approximately 6:30 a.m. Pacific time, after authorities learned a boat had washed onto a beach in Del Mar, which is located approximately 20 miles from San Diego, according to ABC News

It is not clear what the boat was being used for, or how it capsized, but the four injured have been transported to hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately clear. Multiple local and federal agencies are helping with the search for the nine missing people.

"This was a mass casualty incident," Deputy Encinitas Fire Department Chief Jorge Sanchez told the outlet. "We do have air resources that are sweeping lateral, north and south of the beach. ... We do have lifeguards in the water on boats and jet skis, and we have several resources walking up and down the beach as well, making sure that no one is missed."

The United States Coast Guard confirmed the incident in a post on X, stating they were searching for the nine missing people.

Information about the deceased, including their names and ages, have not been released so far.
