Two Minnesota state lawmakers and their spouses shot, resulting in two deaths
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said the attack was "politically motivated." President Trump issued a statement on the attack saying, "Such horrific violence will not be tolerated."
Two Minnesota state Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were shot early Saturday at their respective homes, resulting in two deaths, in what is being described as a "politically motivated" attack.
State Rep. Melissa Hortman and husband Mark were fatally shot in what appears to be a "politically motivated assassination," Gov. Tim Walz said at a news conference.
In the other shooting, state Sen. John Hoffman and wife Yvette were hit by bullets multiple times and underwent surgery, the governor said. Both are expected to survive.
A nephew of the couple said they were each shot five or six times, according to local news outlet KSTP.
A manhunt is now underway for an unnamed, 57-year-old suspect who reportedly was posing as a police officer. He is described as a white male with brown hair and wearing black body armor, according to KSTP.
The shootings occurred between 2-3 a.m.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted a statement from President Donald Trump on X stating that he has been briefed on the shooting.
"Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!" Trump said in the statement.
