The Department of Homeland Security on Monday confirmed that Customs and Border Protection agents have arrested over 130 illegal migrants as part of "Operation Charlotte's Web" in North Carolina over the weekend.

The operation is the latest effort by the Trump administration to crack down on violent crime and illegal immigration nationwide. National Guard troops have been deployed in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Memphis and Los Angeles in recent months while immigration officials carried out raids.

The department said the arrests were of illegal migrants who have all at least broken immigration laws. But some of the migrants also had alleged criminal records that included gang membership, aggravated assault, shoplifting and others, the Associated Press reported. It was not clear how many had been convicted of serious crimes and how many had charges pending.

North Carolina's Democratic Gov. Josh Stein on Sunday slammed the Trump administration's crackdown, stating it was "stoking fear" in the community.

“We’ve seen masked, heavily armed agents in paramilitary garb driving unmarked cars, targeting American citizens based on their skin color, racially profiling and picking up random people in parking lots and off of our sidewalks,” Stein said in a social media video. “This is not making us safer. It’s stoking fear and dividing our community.”
