GOP debuts national security bill with TikTok ban, sanctions
Earlier in the day, the GOP released the text of three separate bills to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.
House Republicans on Wednesday evening unveiled legislation addressing a litany of myriad national security priorities as part of a broader, four-bill effort by House Speaker Mike Johnson to address foreign aid to several embattled nations piecemeal.
Earlier in the day, the GOP released the text of three separate bills to provide aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. A separate bill with border security provisions will also face a vote on Saturday, The Hill reported.
Dubbed the "21st Century Peace through Strength Act," the measure includes a ban on social media platform TikTok should the company fail to separate itself from the Chinese communist government.
Also included are sanctions on Iran, a plan to use seized Russian assets to offset the cost of Ukraine aid, and provisions to make some aid loans, rather than straight grants.
The four-bill security plan comes after the lower chamber largely sat on a Senate-approved, $95 billion aid package that approved aid to all three countries in a single vehicle. That legislation was the subject of a discharge petition that could have seen Democrats force a vote in the House if enough Republicans had backed it.
