The Department of Homeland Security alleged Wednesday that an illegal migrant truck driver is responsible for a multi-car collision last week that killed an Indiana National Guardsman.

Georgian national Goderdzi Gujabidze, 56, allegedly came into the United States illegally in 2022 through Arizona and was later given a non-domiciled Commercial Driver’s License in New York, according to the Daily Wire.

The latest allegation comes after the Transportation Department earlier this year issued new regulations designed to crack down on foreign workers getting commercial driver's licenses, but a judge last week paused the order.

The department said Gujabidze was driving an 18-wheeler truck that towed a trailer carrying multiple cars when he swerved and caused a military vehicle to swerve off the road, resulting in the death of Indiana National Guardsman Terry Frye. Three others were hospitalized.

“Another senseless and avoidable tragedy on America’s roads at the hands of an illegal alien driving a commercial vehicle," DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin told the outlet. "Sanctuary states are recklessly providing commercial driver’s licenses to illegal aliens who should not be operating 18-wheeler and trucks on America’s highways."

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer to take Gujabidze into custody upon his release from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
