Immigrant detention centers have reached maximum capacity, DHS officials say
The number of detainees is reportedly 47,600, as the Trump administration seeks additional federal funding for more bed space.
Homeland Security Department official says the country's migrant detention centers are at maximum capacity at 47,600 detainees.
The information came from a senior U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official – who requested anonymity – on a call Wednesday with reporters, according to Reuters.
DHS officials on the call also said they are working with the Marshals Service, Defense Department and Federal Bureau of Prisons to increase bed space as they ask Congress for more funding, according to NBC News.
President Trump vowed during his winning 2024 presidential campaign to swiftly detain, then deport illegal migrants, amid a surge of them in the U.S. in recent years. However, efforts to deport them have been slowed in large part by logistics and funding issues.
