Maryland sheriff on illegal immigrant killing mom of 5: 'This is preventable'
"That shouldn't happen to families in our country," said Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler of Harford County
A Maryland sheriff said that the rape and murder of Rachel Morin, a mother of five, at the hands of an illegal immigrant who came into the country last February, should not have happened.
Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler of Harford County said that Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, 23, fled the country for the U.S. after he committed a murder in El Salvador.
Morin was found dead on a Harford County trail.
He was arrested sitting at a bar Friday night in Tulsa, Oklahoma after a tip and DNA evidence helped police track him down.
"To my citizens here in Harford County, to every citizen in this country, this is a public safety crisis and one that we can so easily fix by really coming up with a workable immigration policy for our country. It's just insane that we would allow things like Rachel's murder to happen, and when I say ‘allow it,’ we allowed it by letting him into this country unchallenged," he said. "That shouldn't happen to families in our country. This is preventable."
