The New York Police Department (NYPD) on Thursday night announced it was increasing security at Israeli and Jewish sites out of an abundance of caution, after Israel launched strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities.

The U.S. has distanced itself from the Israeli action and warned Iran not to attack American facilities in retaliation, but Israel is expected to continue its attacks on Iran into Friday morning. The attack appeared to target dozens of facilities and eliminate a number of top Iranian officials.

The NYPD said it was monitoring the situation in the Middle East and is communicating with federal partners to boost security, but did not cite any specific threats.

"The NYPD is tracking the situation in the Middle East. Out of an abundance of caution, we're deploying additional resources to Jewish, Israeli & other sites throughout NYC," the department posted to X. "We’re coordinating with our federal partners & we'll continue to monitor for any potential impact to NYC."

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he has been briefed on the situation and the city's Counterterrorism Unit is monitoring the situation.

Law enforcement officers in Washington, D.C. are also boosting security around the Israeli embassy, including implementing additional road closures in the wake of the attack on Iran, according to Fox 5 D.C.
