President Donald Trump on Monday released a 20-point plan to end the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza.
The White House released the plan in an email release amid a meeting between Trump and Netanyahu. Trump himself confirmed in a press conference that Netanyahu had accepted the plan.
"I also want to thank Prime Minister Netanyahu for agreeing to the plan and for trusting that if we work together, we can bring an end to the death and destruction that we've seen for so many years, decades, even centuries, and begin a new chapter of security, peace and prosperity for the entire region," he said.
The plan requires the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the strip and the release of all remaining hostages. Israel would, moreover, commit to releasing 250 life prisoners and as many as 1,700 Gazans taken into Israeli custody since Oct. 7, 2023.
Hamas members who commit to peace would receive an amnesty and the agreement would permit humanitarian aid to enter the strip.
Trump himself would assume leadership of a "Board of Peace" made up of foreign heads of state to oversee the process until the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, is ready to assume governance of the region.
Under the terms of the agreement, Israel would not be permitted to annex or occupy the Gaza Strip. Point 19 explicitly expresses the goal that the Palestinian Authority will make significant reforms to prepare for "self-determination and statehood."
