Two Joint Base Andrews buildings evacuated over 'suspicious package'
The base, which is home to Air Force One and houses around 60,000 airmen and their families, is a frequent military hub for military and political officials and is located in Prince George's County.
Officials at Maryland's Joint Base Andrews said Thursday two buildings have been evacuated after a "suspicious package" was sent to one of them.
The base, which is home to Air Force One, the official U.S. presidential aircraft and that houses about 60,000 airmen and their families, is in Prince George's County, about 20 miles from the White House.
A spokesperson for the base told CBS News that a person opened a suspicious package in one of the buildings, which was evacuated and cordoned off, along with a neighboring building, as a precaution.
"Joint Base Andrews first responders were dispatched to the scene, determined there were no immediate threats, and have turned the scene over to Office of Special Investigations," the spokesperson said. "An investigation is currently ongoing."
Officials also told Fox News on Thursday that several people felt ill after the package was opened, and base medical personnel responded immediately and treated the people. It was not clear why people felt sick or if it was directly related to the package, but the people were later released in stable condition.
