Two American military helicopters were struck by enemy fire Friday while conducting recovery operations in Iran.

The helicopters were searching for the missing crew member of a military plane that was shot down earlier Friday. One of the pilots of the Air Force F-15E fighter jet has been found. A second military jet also crashed in the Middle East Friday.

A source identified one of the military helicopters to The Hill as a U.S. Air Force UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The other was described as a search-and-rescue helicopter. Both aircrafts managed to escape, according to the outlet.

The incidents come after the U.S. and Israel began a weeks-long conflict with Iran in February, which resulted in the death of former Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated against the U.S. and Israel by hitting American bases in the region and the U.S. warned Iran could expand its efforts to impact U.S. facilities in other countries.
