The State Department on Thursday issued a joint statement with the leaders of 13 of the United States' closest allies, including the United Kingdom, condemning a recent surge in threats believed to be plotted by Iranian intelligence agencies.

The countries were responding to a rise in alleged assassination, kidnapping and harassment plots in Europe and North America that are believed to be organized by Iran and orchestrated in collaboration with international criminal networks, Reuters reported.

The joint statement also claimed that the plots included threats against journalists, dissidents, former and current government officials and Jewish citizens.

"We are united in our opposition to the attempts of Iranian intelligence services to kill, kidnap, and harass people in Europe and North America in clear violation of our sovereignty," the statement reads. "We are committed to working together to prevent these actions from happening and we call on the Iranian authorities to immediately put an end to such illegal activities in our respective territories."

The statement was signed by leaders in the U.S. the United Kingdom, Albania, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

Iran was allegedly behind "real and specific" threats against President Donald Trump during his presidential campaign last year, and Iranian hackers targeted Trump's campaign emails and stole information last year that they tried to leak to the United States media. They also tried to share the information with the Biden and Harris campaigns.
