Florida incumbent Rep. Jared Moskowitz on Tuesday night held onto his seat in the state's 25th congressional district, one of first signs that Republicans are in for a long night and Democrats are likely to gain control of the House.

The Associated Press called the race at 8:07 p.m. ET, more than an hour after polls closed in the Sunshine State, with 95% of the vote counted. At the time of reporting, Moskowitz led Republican challenger Scott Singer by 5.1 percentage points.

Republicans in Florida redrew the House map prior to this election, and hoped to flip Moskowitz’s seat red along with several other Democrat seats.

This is a developing story.

Democrats need to gain just three net seats to gain control of the House, which Republicans currently hold with a slim 220-215 majority with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., leading the chamber. With Democrats on track to win a majority, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., would likely take over as House Speaker in January.

If Democrats flip the House but don’t end up with a large majority, it could be difficult to enact their agenda since they would have little room for defections when negotiating major pieces of legislation. Further, with Trump still in the White House, it is unlikely Democrats will be able to accomplish much of their agenda due to the president’s veto power. Democrats have indicated that they would spend their majority investigating the Trump administration, keeping Trump allies trapped in investigations instead of doing their actual jobs.
