NCAA wrestler Wyatt Hendrickson salutes Trump after upset, gets draped with American flag
Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., who attended the match, said Trump was scheduled to leave two matches before Hendrickson's but decided to stay to see the "big guy."
NCAA wrestler Wyatt Hendrickson saluted President Trump after his upset win on Saturday night.
Hendrickson, an Oklahoma State wrestler and former Air Force wrestler, walked over to Trump after he was draped with the American flag and the two were seen having a conversation.
Hendrickson defeated Minnesota’s Gable Steveson 5-3 to win the Heavyweight title.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., who attended the match, said Trump was scheduled to leave two matches before Hendrickson's but decided to stay to see the "big guy."
Mullin said Trump had previously met Hendrickson, a current second lieutenant, 3 years ago.
"They actually developed a friendship," Mullin said. "He looked at me and says, 'I can't leave, I have to watch my big guy.'"
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the head of Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, also attended the match, which was held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
