Trump, King Charles observe fife and drum performance during Royal visit

President Donald Trump and King Charles III observed a performance of the U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps during the royal visit to Washington, D.C.

Video footage showed a unit of musicians in traditional military garb playing period music while parading in front of the president and monarch.

Many observers misidentified the Corps as "redcoats" due to their bright red uniforms, which stand in contrast to the American blue that dominated the period. During the Revolutionary War, British soldiers were often referred to as "Redcoats" or "lobsterbacks," in reference to their uniforms.

The corps played "Yankee Doodle," an American Revolutionary War march, as part of its performance.

The display led Trump to remark on the irony of the British monarch receiving such a welcome, but said "no tribute could be more appropriate."

"Long before Americans had a nation or Constitution, we first had a culture, a character, and a creed. Before we ever proclaimed our independence, Americans carried within us the rarest of gifts: moral courage, and it came from a small but mighty kingdom from across the sea," he said.
