Vice President JD Vance joins Democratic social media platform Bluesky
Vance made his first post on Bluesky on Wednesday afternoon, where he commented on a Supreme Court decision regarding “gender-affirming” medical treatment for transgender youths.
Vice President JD Vance, a Republican, joined a liberal social media platform on Wednesday that has been characterized as competition for Elon Musk's X.
The platform emerged as a liberal hub in 2023, after a significant number of Democrats left X in protest of Musk's acquisition and subsequent relaxation of X's censorship rules. But it first started as a project within X (then Twitter), then separated in 2021.
Vance made his first post on Bluesky on Wednesday afternoon, where he commented on a Supreme Court decision regarding “gender-affirming” medical treatment for transgender youths.
“Hello Bluesky, I’ve been told this app has become the place to go for common sense political discussion and analysis," Vance wrote in his post. "So I’m thrilled to be here to engage with all of you."
The vice president supported Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' opinion, noting the opinion was "illuminating," after Thomas claimed experts in the case pushed an agenda that included experimental therapies.
Vance's entrance was met with some backlash that resulted in him being suspended after just 20 minutes on the platform, per the Washington Times. However, his account was later restored.
The vice president has not commented on the suspension.
