VP Vance says Iranian response to U.S. attack would be met with 'overwhelming force'
If Iran strikes back, that will signal an escalation and possible further involvement by the United States, Vance says
Vice President JD Vance warned on Sunday that any retaliatory attack by Iran on the United States would be met with overwhelming force.
"If the Iranians attack us, they're going to be met with overwhelming force," Vance said in a Sunday morning appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Vance emphasized that recent U.S. strikes did not target the nation of Iran or any civilian areas.
"We didn't attack the nation of Iran. We did not attack any civilian targets," he said.
Vance specified that the strikes were aimed at three nuclear weapons facilities deemed critical to preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
He described the facilities as ones the U.S. considered "important to accomplish our goal of preventing Iran from having a nuclear weapon."
He stated that the U.S. actions were "very precise" and "narrowly tailored to our objective."
Vance noted that an Iranian response would be considered an expansion of the conflict and prompt a subsequent U.S. response.
"If Iranians decide to expand this, then that's ultimately their decision, and the President of the United States will respond in kind," he said.
His remarks were made in the context of heightened tensions following U.S. military actions against Iran.
