White House confirms former Marine Robert Gilman has landed back in the US

The White House on Wednesday night welcomed former Marine Robert Gilman back to the United States and confirmed the man has returned safely from Russia.

The former Marine's return comes a day after President Donald Trump secured his release after four years in captivity. The president did not detail the agreement he reached with Russia but said it was "very much on a humanitarian basis."

Gilman was imprisoned by the Russians in 2022 and his release is one of several the U.S. has reached with Russia in recent years in exchange for Russians held by the United States.

"Welcome home, Robert Gilman!" The White House posted on X alongside a video. "After more than four years detained in Russia, American citizen Robert Gilman is finally back on U.S. soil. Thanks to the Trump Admin, another American is safely home where he belongs. God bless Robert Gilman, and God bless America." 

Trump said Gilman asked for a cheeseburger for when he lands, which the president said he will grant. He also noted that Gilman's mother, Nancy Gilman, was also on the plane with her son as he returned to the U.S.

"During my Administration, we have prioritized bringing home Americans Detained Abroad, and have done so at a level never seen before, returning hundreds of people to their families," Trump posted to Truth Social on Tuesday. "We have also freed many non Americans who were under capture in different countries throughout the World.

"Thank you to my incredible Team, including Special Envoy for Peace Missions, Steve Witkoff, Special Envoy for Hostage Response, Adam Boehler, Senior Director for Counterterrorism, Sebastian Gorka, Jared Kushner, and the many others who made this possible," he added.
