The Democratic National Committee sued the Trump administration Wednesday for using taxpayer dollars to fund recent advertisements that tout the administration, alleging they could violate federal propaganda law.

The White House and President Donald Trump have defended the advertisements as patriotic and claimed they were promoting the United States as a whole, not the president and his administration specifically.

The DNC asked a federal judge to stop the use of government funds to pay for the ads, which comes after Trump said he would use his Super PAC MAGA Inc. to pay for the advertisements moving forward, according to the Associated Press.

DNC Chair Ken Martin accused Trump of misusing taxpayer dollars in “a last-ditch attempt to save Republicans in November.”

"As gas and grocery costs rise and his approval numbers continue to crater, this president has stooped to taking money from a fund intended for memorials for Americans killed in the line of duty to promote his failed policies," he said in a statement. "Americans deserve better than to have their hard-earned tax dollars used for Trump’s illegal schemes.”

The ads, which began airing last month, have already cost more than $12 million to run, according to the media tracking firm AdImpact.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have also criticized the ads, with some questioning the legality of using taxpayer dollars to promote the president's agenda ahead of a critical midterm election. One video reiterated his plan to give every adult U.S. citizen $5,000 if the GOP wins the midterm elections next month.
