California's Fresno County District Attorney’s Office has filed four charges against an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who was shot by a 72-year-old last week during a confrontation at the resident's home.

The office on Tuesday identified the officer as 32-year-old David Gonzalez III, of McAllen, Texas, and said he has been charged with felony assault likely to produce great bodily injury, felony elder abuse, felony vandalism and misdemeanor battery.

The confrontation took place Friday after Gonzalez, who was off duty at the time, was allegedly found sleeping on the front lawn of the homeowner’s residence. The incident took place in the early morning hours.

Prosecutors alleged that Gonzalez attacked the man after he stepped out of the home to ask Gonzalez to leave and the homeowner sustained visible injuries when he fell. Gonzalez also allegedly threw the victim into a neighbor’s parked vehicle, causing significant damage to the side of it.

The ICE officer also allegedly assaulted the homeowner's daughter, who had come out to help her father.

The homeowner, who has not been identified, then allegedly feared for his safety and fired one round from a firearm he legally possessed, striking Gonzalez. The officer was later arrested and transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

If convicted of all charges, Gonzalez faces a maximum sentence of four years and eight months in detention.

Gonzalez remains in custody at a hospital, and his bail has been set at $52,000.
