The Justice Department on Tuesday reportedly failed to secure a grand jury indictment against former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, regarding allegations that she lied to Congress.

It was not exactly clear what the statements were that the Justice Department tried to persuade a jury were not true, but it was likely related to her testimony in front of the House Jan. 6 Committee and its investigation of the riot at the Capitol.

She also testified that President Trump had attempted to grab the wheel from his driver and redirect the presidential vehicle to the Capitol on January 6, 2021. But her story has faced scrutiny for years.

A Justice Department lawyer told a magistrate judge Tuesday that a grand jury could not agree on an indictment, according to Axios. The lawyer did not specify that the indictment pertained to Hutchinson, but multiple sources told news outlets that it referred to the former aide.

The Justice Department's Civil Rights Division sought the grand jury indictment in a break from precedent. Normally, the investigation and indictment would have been pursued by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., which is led by Jeanine Pirro.
