Missouri AG appeals to Supreme Court to reinstate Trump-backed congressional map

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene after the Missouri Supreme Court blocked a Republican-backed congressional map ahead of the November midterm elections.

Hanaway filed an emergency appeal Friday seeking to halt the state court’s ruling and allow the new districts to be used in November. 

"Never before in American history has a court overturned a congressional map after a primary and before a general election. This unprecedented decision clearly violates federal law and has thrust our state into a full‑fledged constitutional crisis," she wrote on X. 

"Our office will move immediately to seek relief from SCOTUS. We are confident that the federal courts will not allow every Missouri voter to be disenfranchised—which is what today’s decision does," she added.

The map, backed by President Donald Trump and designed to give Republicans a better chance of gaining another House seat, was used in Missouri’s August primary.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the map cannot take effect because opponents collected more than 300,000 signatures for a referendum challenging it. The court ordered the November election to use the previous congressional districts unless voters approve the new map.
