TikTok agrees to $100 million settlement with Alabama over teen safety

TikTok has agreed to pay the state of Alabama at least $100 million and implement a series of new safety measures for teenagers under a settlement reached just before the social media company was scheduled to go to trial.

Alabama sued TikTok in 2025, alleging that the platform contributed to negative effects on the mental health of young people.

The lawsuit focused on what the state described as TikTok’s “addictive properties,” including its algorithm, which delivers highly personalized videos based on users’ interests and activity. Alabama alleged that TikTok knew its platform could pose risks to children but failed to adequately address them.
