Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that Russia struck several energy targets in Ukraine just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally announced an energy ceasefire.

Trump said on Sunday that there would be a ceasefire between the two countries after he negotiated a deal with Russia to supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the United States amid a global supply crunch.

Zelensky said the Russians struck a thermal power plant in Kharkiv and other energy targets around the country despite the U.S. president’s announcement.

“It is clear that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin does not read Truth Social, and his ‘shahed’ drones follow a different set of instructions,” Zelensky wrote in a post to X on Monday. “But we in Ukraine immediately supported the idea of an energy ceasefire, as we did more than once for months when we ourselves put forward this idea. We agreed to an energy ceasefire.”

He later added, “But if Russia wants us to stop our long-range strikes against its oil refineries and oil exports, then Russia must stop its strikes against our energy system and critical infrastructure. This is only fair.”

Zelensky’s opposition to the new U.S.-Russia diesel deal has brought new tensions into his relationship with President Trump. This weekend, Trump called on Ukraine to elect a new president and boot Zelensky from office.
