Collins takes the lead in Maine Senate race: Poll

The Maine Republican has a long history of outperforming the polls, even in cycles that are tough for Republicans more generally.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has taken the lead in her reelection bid, according to a recent survey.

Overall, Collins took 49% support in the latest New York Times/Siena College survey, compared to Democratic candidate Troy Jackson's 46%.

The Maine Republican has a long history of outperforming the polls, even in cycles that are tough for Republicans more generally, and an outright lead, albeit a small one, bodes well for her, come November.

While the 5% margin of error means the race is still a statistical tie, it marks the latest survey to show Collins gaining ground. On average, however, Jackson still holds a 1.0% lead, according to RealClearPolitics.

The race is expected to be competitive and a Republican loss in the state would likely doom party efforts to hold the Senate.
