Detroit News endorses Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan Senate race

The Detroit News has endorsed Republican nominee Mike Rogers in Michigan's Senate, calling him the "prototype of a United States Senator." 

The newspaper cited Rogers' 14 years in the House in which he led the chamber's Intelligence Committee. Rogers left in 2014 to start a career in private industry and cybersecurity. He also was an officer in the U.S. Army and an FBI agent in the agency's organized crime division, the editorial stated. 

The editorial pointed out that Rogers' Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, spent two years in Detroit's Health Department and two more in the Wayne County Department of Health, Human and Veterans Services. Though he has a doctorate in public health, the editorial argued, he has never held a political or policymaking position. 

El-Sayed and Rogers are competing for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Gary Peters. 

The editorial acknowledged concerns about the endorsement Rogers received from President Donald Trump, but argued that Rogers can help reverse "the harm of Trump's policies and return the Republican Party to its conservative roots."
