El-Sayed says he spoke to Obama, hopes he will campaign for him

Abdul El-Sayed said he had a “warm and inspiring” conversation with former President Barack Obama after winning Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, and he is hoping the former president will join him on the campaign trail.

El-Sayed revealed the conversation as he turns his attention to the general election and a matchup with Republican Mike Rogers.

“I had a really warm and inspiring conversation with President Obama,” El-Sayed said on NBC's Meet the Press, according to the Associated Press. 

He added that he hopes Obama will “come out and campaign with us.”

The call comes just days after El-Sayed pulled off a narrow victory over Rep. Haley Stevens in a closely watched Democratic primary that exposed divisions within the party between its progressive and establishment wings.
