Trump, comparing himself to Teddy Roosevelt, signs orders benefiting hunters and fishermen

President Donald Trump played host to more than 100 hunters, fishermen, other sportsmen and industry representatives at the White House Rose Garden Thursday evening, where he announced executive orders loosening certain hunting and fishing restrictions. 

“We believe that public lands belong to the American people and to the public, and hunters, fishers, and outdoorsmen should be able to access them,” Trump said.

One order mandates an expansion of federal land available for hunting and fishing, building on a previous order that opened up 92 million acres of federal land across 32 states, according to The Hill. That will be carried out by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. 

The second executive order modernizes federal fishery management, expanding fishing seasons and quotas. Citing President Teddy Roosevelt as another president focused on such matters, Trump also referred to his 2020 Great American Outdoors Act, which provided billions of dollars for national parks and millions for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). He promised a new version that 2020 act would be coming in the “very near future.”
