More than 19 million eggs voluntarily recalled due to potential salmonella contamination

Midwest Poultry Services is voluntarily recalling nearly 1.6 million 12-packs of eggs — a total of 19 million eggs — due to possible salmonella contamination. 

The eggs were produced and distributed from farms in Texas between June 6 and July 3, with sell-by or best-by dates between July 20 and Aug. 17, according to the company's announcement posted on the Food and Drug Administration's website. 

The eggs were shipped to food service and retail customers in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi. 

Salmonella poisoning causes fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It can also cause diarrhea, which may be bloody. In rare circumstances, the organism that causes the infection can get into the blood stream and produce more severe illnesses, including arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
