Trump on AI guardrails: Only need a 'strong and smart' president

President Donald Trump on Monday doubled down on his support for a rapid expansion of AI, contending that his judgment was sufficient to act as a guardrail against the risks.

"The only reason the AI/Data Center outburst is happening is because the United States is leading, by a lot, every other country. Don’t kill the Golden Goose!" he posted on Truth Social.

AI engineers and developers have, in recent weeks, made headlines for their warnings about the threats of rapid development and the potential for a self-improving model to get away from its human overseers. But Trump brushed off those concerns in a Monday post.

"The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!" he posted on Truth Social. "The Trump Administration has stopped AI 'people' from doing bad, or potentially bad, 'things,' like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a 'perfect little angel' - and we will continue to do so!"

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, recently outlined a plan for an AI slowdown, saying "[w]e must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models."

Trump, however, contended that existing oversight was sufficient.

"We already have tremendous CRIMINAL and REGULATORY power over these companies! There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China," he added. "WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE!"

The president has also publicly backed the continued expansion of data centers, even as public sentiment turns against their construction.
