Nearly 60 Democrats signed onto a letter condemning lynchings, but most cases ruled suicides

Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., led a coalition of nearly 60 Democrats in condemning recent reports of "Black people found hanging from trees in numerous states throughout our country." 

"The series of deaths raise significant suspicion of foul play given the role of lynching in our nation’s history," the Democrats wrote in their letter sent to the Department of Justice on Tuesday. 

Pressley and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who also signed the letter, wrote about the campaign in posts on X, but readers of the post have proposed notes that point out that most of the high-profile cases cited in the letter have been ruled suicides. 

They include a case in Mississippi in which a Black student was found hanging from a tree, and an autopsy by the office of Mississippi’s state medical examiner concluded the student committed suicide, the Associated Press reported. Investigators in another case in Fair Oaks Park, Georgia, also found no evidence of foul play, ruling the death a suicide, Fox5 reported. 

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who also owns the X social media platform, asked Grok AI about the cases, which responded that most of the cases were ruled suicides. One is being investigated as a homicide, and the person of interest in the case is black, who hasn't been charged, People reported. Another case remains under investigation, but none of the cases have identified a non-Black suspect or racially-motivated attack.
