Progressive lawmakers to travel to Latin America this week for PanAmerican congress
The summit is in its third year and its goal is to push back against a rising right-wing agenda in Latin America.
Progressive Democratic lawmakers are expected to travel to Uruguay later this week to attend the PanAmerican Congress, where they are expected to challenge President Donald Trump’s “Donroe Doctrine."
The Trump administration's doctrine refers to its strategy of working with Latin American countries to combat crime, curb illegal immigration and reduce threats from China, but far-left lawmakers argued the approach ignores human rights and weaponizes tariffs to pressure governments, according to The Hill.
Washington Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal is one of the lawmakers who will lead the delegation from Aug. 21-23. The summit is in its third year and its goal is to push back against a rising conservative agenda in Latin America.
“We need to build a durable and lasting coalition of progressives that can take on the right-wing forces and answer them with the necessary call of the people,” Jayapal said. “This is a critically important opportunity to build solidarity in the fight against interventionism and democratic backsliding, and to learn how the United States can be a partner in those efforts.”
Jayapal claimed Monday that the administration's approach is interfering in sovereign elections and making conditions harder for Cubans.
"Before this year's Panamerican Congress, I'm demanding the Trump administration answer for their 'Donroe Doctrine,'" Jayapal wrote on X. "It follows a partisan playbook: lethal force, economic coercion, interference in the democratic life of sovereign nations. These tactics destabilize our hemisphere and endanger our neighbors.
Several Democratic Socialist candidates will also attend the summit, including Claire Valdez, who is running for the House in New York’s 7th District; Darializa Avila Chevalier, who is running for New York’s 13th District; and Chris Rabb, who is running for Pennsylvania’s 3rd District.
