Rep. Randy Fine says he will introduce resolution to expel Omar if she lied on immigration paperwork
Fine emphasized that a lawmaker has to be an American citizen in order to serve in either chamber, meaning Omar would need to be removed from her post if convicted of immigration fraud.
Florida GOP Rep. Randy Fine said Monday night that he would personally introduce a resolution to expel Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar if a federal investigation finds that she lied on her immigration paperwork.
Omar is the focus of a federal investigation that centers on allegations that she or her father lied about her birth year on immigration paperwork to obtain her citizenship when her family fled Somalia in the late 1990s.
Fine emphasized that a lawmaker has to be an American citizen in order to serve in either chamber, meaning Omar would need to be removed from her post if convicted of immigration fraud.
"The evidence seems pretty overwhelming that she is not an American citizen for multiple reasons," Fine said on the "Just The News, No Noise" TV show. "What's crazy is it appears that evidence has been out there for years, but nobody wanted to talk about it. Well, I appreciate President Trump taking a hard look at it, getting to the bottom of it, and if she's not an American, deporting her back to Somalia."
Fine said that if Omar is not immediately deported or arrested if she's convicted, then he would personally introduce the motion to expel her from Congress.
"I think we would have to put forward an expulsion motion," Fine said. "I would presume she wouldn't be around to deal with it if she was not an American. They're going to pick her up, and they're going to deport her. But if it doesn't happen automatically and the evidence is real, I will introduce that expulsion resolution.
"Moreover, I'll move to expel any Democrat who doesn't vote to expel her, because it is very simple," he continued. "You cannot serve in Congress if you are not a citizen of the United States. If that's what the evidence shows, there is no choice. She's got to go."
Federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations raided Omar's home on Oct. 12. The lawmaker told MS Now that the raid lasted four to five hours and involved as many as 25 agents.
She said they conducted themselves in a mostly "decent way" during the search of her home in compliance with the warrant. She also said agents took 17 items, including roughly 10 notebooks and old phones.
