An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer Tuesday shot and injured an illegal Salvadoran migrant in California, after the illegal migrant allegedly weaponized his vehicle against ICE agents during a targeted traffic stop.

The agents were reportedly attempting to arrest Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez in Patterson, California, who was wanted in El Salvador for questioning in relation to a murder. ICE claimed the migrant is an 18th Street Gang member.

"As officers approached the car, the wanted gang member weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run an officer over," ICE Director Todd Lyons said. "Following their training, our officers fired defensive shots to protect themselves, their fellow agents, and the public. The illegal alien was taken to a local hospital. The FBI is on the scene."

The incident comes after two anti-ICE protesters were fatally shot by federal law enforcement officers in Minneapolis earlier this year.

Several allegedly illegal migrants have also been injured by federal law enforcement this year, including one in Portland in January.
