Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliana, 81, continues his recovery in a Florida hospital from pneumonia but has been moved out of the intensive care unit, his spokesperson says.

"Mayor Giuliani – the man who took down the Mafia, saved New York City, and ran toward the towers on September 11th—is the same fighter he's always been, and he's winning this fight," Ted Goodman, Giuliana's spokesperson said in a post on X Wednesday.

Giuliani has been in a hospital since last weekend. The illness was exacerbated by his exposure to toxins and dust from the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, Goodman said in previous posts on the former mayor's condition.

Giuliani began coughing on his nightly online talk show on Friday and told his viewers that he wasn't feeling well. He was taken to the hospital near Palm Beach, Florida, sometime after the show aired. The condition he developed after the terrorist attacks, Goodman said, complicates respiratory illnesses, allowing viruses to quickly overwhelm him.

He required mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen, but he was breathing on his own on Monday.
