The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have arrested a Jordanian national who has been accused of lying on his immigration application about his record and of aiding Hamas.

The department said Salah Sarsour, who has lived in the United States for over 30 years, lied when he applied for a green card, which was granted under former President Bill Clinton in 1998. He was first admitted to the U.S. in 1993.

The Jordanian, who serves as the president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, was reportedly convicted in Israel as a teenager after throwing molotov cocktails at the homes of Israeli soldiers, and was accused in the 1990s of helping to raise money for Hamas, according to the Daily Wire.

"Thanks to President Trump and ICE, this terrorist is out of American communities," Acting Assistant DHS Secretary Lauren Bis said. "This Administration will always put the safety of the American people FIRST and Make America Safe Again.”

The department claimed the arrest was made in a joint operation with the U.S. Marshals Service and is considered by the news media as a “non-criminal” arrest because Sarsour does not have a criminal rap sheet in the United States.

"Targeting people because of their beliefs or background is wrong," Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers said on X. "This is clearly about sowing division and fear and doesn't help make Wisconsin safer."

Sarsour is expected to remain in ICE custody until deportation proceedings are carried out, per DHS.
