Trump says Iran has made a gesture of goodwill by releasing US woman who was wrongfully detained
The name of the woman was not immediately released, nor was the crime she was accused of committing. But the president said she was detained by Iran during the Biden administration in 2024.
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night that the Iranian government made a gesture of goodwill toward the United States by allowing the release of an American woman who was wrongfully detained in the country.
The name of the woman was not immediately released, nor was the crime she was accused of committing. But the president said she was detained by Iran during the Biden administration in 2024.
"Iran has allowed an American citizen, who was wrongfully detained in December of 2024 under the 'presidency' of Sleepy Joe Biden, to leave the country," Trump said on Truth Social. "She is now safely outside of Iran, and in good condition. The United States of America appreciates this gesture of goodwill by Iran!"
The gesture comes after fighting in the region resumed this week after negotiations failed to end the war.
The conflict was previously in a state of nominal ceasefire for months and the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding to extend the ceasefire by 60 days last month. However, that collapsed after Iran opened fire on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump has since ordered renewed hostilities, citing intermittent flare-ups of live-fire exchanges that he said undermined peace talks.
