Democratic RI governor projected to become first sitting governor to lose primary in 8 years

 Rhode Island Democratic Gov. Dan McKee is projected to become the first sitting governor in eight years to lose a primary, after he was projected to lose to former CVS executive Helena Foulkes on Wednesday night. 

The Associated Press called the race for Foulkes with 62% of the votes compared to McKee's 37% and 94% of the votes counted.

McKee is now the first sitting governor anywhere in the country to lose a primary in eight years, according to CBS News.

The governor previously served as Lt. Gov. but was elevated to the top post in 2021 when then-Gov. Gina Raimondo was tapped to serve as commerce secretary during the Biden administration. He was elected to a full term in 2022.

Foulkes will now face either Aaron Guckian or Elaine Pelino in November, but Foulkes is the favorite to win as Rhode Island is considered a reliably blue state.
