Multiple hospitals shutter youth gender transition clinics as part of deal with Trump admin

Multiple hospitals nationwide recently closed their gender health clinics and agreed to stop providing gender-transition treatment to minors in order to end a Justice Department investigation into potential legal violations related to billing practices and consumer fraud.

The latest deals were reached last week with two major hospitals in New York and Pennsylvania, and comes after the Justice Department reached similar deals with the Mount Sinai Health System, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Connecticut Children’s Hospital. 

“The Department of Justice is fighting to protect our nation’s children and working tirelessly to reach agreements with hospitals to end so-called ‘gender-affirming care’ for minors,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement on Friday. “Today’s resolutions send a clear message: hospitals that target children in these practices and then fraudulently obtain payment for the procedures will be held to account.”

The deals come after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last year that pulled funding for hospitals and healthcare providers that do not stop providing gender-affirming treatments to people under the age of 19.

Trump also directed the Justice Department last year to prioritize investigations and enforcement actions involving violations of federal law in the provision of so-called “gender-affirming care” to children, which kicked off a probe into the child gender-transition industry.

The latest deals end investigations into the New York University Langone Hospitals and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. As part of the deals, NYU has agreed to pay $8.5 million and UPMC agreed to pay $950,000.
