Trump surgeon general pick, sometimes RFK Jr. critic, Dr. Nicole Saphier, gets confirmation hearing

President Donald Trump's nominee for U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Nicole Saphier, is set for her Senate confirmation hearing Wednesday.

Saphier, a radiologist and former Fox News contributor, will appear before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

Trump nominated Saphier in April after his first nominee, Dr. Casey Means, failed to get enough support in the Senate to be confirmed, according to The New York Times. 

Saphier, director of breast imaging at a New Jersey branch of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, would bring an extensive medical and wellness background to the role. She started a supplement company and hosted a podcast where she mixes Western medicine with Eastern techniques and natural remedies. 

In 2020, Saphier wrote a book with "Make America Healthy Again" in the title, long before Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. used the slogan. 

However, she has questioned Kennedy's approach to addressing autism and his department's hiring of David Geier, a prominent anti-vaccine activist, to be involved in the autism work.

Saphier appears to have enough votes in the GOP-led committee to be recommended – or "confirmed" – to get a final confirmation vote by the full Senate, which historically accepts the committee's favorable recommendation.
