Trump predicts 'midterm surprise' as he touts rally crowds
Trump's comments come as polling suggests that Democrats will make gains in both chambers of Congress in November.
President Donald Trump on Tuesday predicted a "midterm surprise" in light of the attendance at his rallies, seemingly suggesting they signaled greater enthusiasm for the party than polls reflected.
"My Rally crowds and enthusiasm are unbelievable! Nobody has ever seen anything like it. We are flipping races all over the place," he posted on Truth Social. "The Fake News knows it, but they don’t want to be truthful with their viewers. It’s all happening!"
"The Dumocrats never counted on this. Thanks you to the great Networks that are covering the Rallies in full [sic]. They are being rewarded with BIG RATINGS. Watch for the 'Midterm Surprise!'" he added.
Trump's comments come as polling suggests that Democrats will make gains in both chambers of Congress in November. While the out-of-power party typically does make inroads during the midterms, Trump and the Republicans hope to buck the historical trend and preserve control of the House and Senate.
His remarks also follow a Monday dispute with the New York Times in which he objected to reporting from the magazine on what it described as sparse attendance for his rallies.
Trump insisted that the Ohio rally the outlet described was "totally MAXED OUT" and that the empty seats the reporter observed were because "people in the upper sections tend to migrate down to the Main Floor"
