FBI offers $5K reward for information on assailant responsible for Georgia acid attack

The FBI Atlanta field office on Monday offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for an acid attack last week on a woman at Savannah's Forsyth Park in Georgia.

The victim has been identified as 46-year-old Ashley Wasielewski, who was attacked during a walk after a Christmas party on Dec. 10 at a nearby church. She has primarily third degree burns on approximately half of her body, including her scalp, face, and legs, according to CBS News.

Savannah police have not identified anyone as a suspect so far, but are talking to a person of interest who has been dubbed "Bugs Bunny guy" because of his dark hoodie that featured the cartoon character. 

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson told reporters Tuesday that the man is not a suspect currently and came in voluntarily.

"He is not detained at this time. We are just asking questions of him," Johnson said, adding that the attack is something that shocked him and other city residents. "In all the time that I have been in law enforcement here and engaged in public service — over 30 years — I cannot remember anything like this involving acid. And there are just so many questions."

Savannah police have increased patrols in parks around the city out of an abundance of caution and urged residents to stay aware of their surroundings and report suspicious activity. However, they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. 

Johnson also praised Wasielewski for her "remarkable attitude" despite the attack, and promised to continue supporting her during her recovery.

"We'll be very interested in justice and accountability," he said. "Because I think what will make her feel best is to make sure that whoever did this is off of our streets."

Wasielewski's friends created a GoFundMe to cover her hospital bills and recovery, and the FBI has established a digital tip line for photos and videos that may aid in the investigation here.
