The suspect in the Wednesday evening shooting of five Pennsylvania police officers was identified as 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth, according to a news report.

An anonymous law enforcement official told The Associated Press the identity of the shooter.

Ruth, who allegedly killed three officers and injured two others on Wednesday, was killed by police during the shootout. The officers who were shot were following up on a domestic-related investigation that began on Tuesday.

The shooting occurred in the area of North Codorus Township, which is between Harrisburg and Maryland, authorities said.

As part of the emergency response in the rural area, about 30 police vehicles blocked off roads bordered by a barn, a goat farm, and soybean and corn fields.

The officers and police department they belonged to have not been identified by authorities, citing the investigation.

The two officers who were injured are in critical but stable condition at York Hospital, authorities said.
