Legendary college football coach, of Netflix fame, shot on campus, in critical condition

A legendary Oakland college football coach was shot on campus and is hospitalized in critical condition, according to a report.
Laney College Athletic Director John Beam was reportedly shot Thursday at the field house on campus, ABC7 News reported.
While the Oakland Police Department did not confirm the identity of the shooting victim, the fire department confirmed that a man was being treated for a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital.
Unnamed sources told ABC7 News that Beam was shot in the head, and his condition is unknown.
Laney is a public community college and part of the four-campus Peralta Community College District.
"At approximately noon, a senior member of our athletic staff was shot on campus in the Laney Field House. The individual was immediately transported to a local hospital, and we are keeping them-and their loved ones-in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for their privacy, we are not releasing their name at this moment," the district said in a statement after the shooting.
Acting Oakland Police Chief James Beere said at a press conference on Thursday that shots fired were first reported just before noon.
Police initially responded to the incident as if there was an active shooter, but then determined there was not.
The college was placed on lockdown earlier in the day, but it was lifted at 1:15 p.m. The campus was closed for the rest of the day on Thursday, but school officials said it would be open on Friday.
The shooting suspect is said to have fled the scene, and police are still searching for the person, who was described as a male of unknown race, wearing dark clothing and a black hoodie.
In 2020, the college's football program was featured on the Netflix series "Last Chance U." At the time, Beam was the head coach.
