Sovereignty beats Journalism to win Belmont Stakes, two-thirds of Triple Crown
Sovereignty missed a chance at horse racing history when the horse opted out of the Preakness.
Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado beat Journalism on Saturday evening to win the 157th Belmont Stakes and two-thirds of horse racing's Triple Crown.
Journalism, who won the Preakness Stakes when Sovereignty dropped out, finished second while Baeza took third in an exact finish of the Kentucky Derby a month ago.
Sovereignty, a 5-2 favorite, won by three lengths in 2 minutes, 0.69 seconds.
